Position Overview:
 

The Diesel Service Technician assists with maintenance, lubrication, parts replacement and other vehicle repair duties on Class A & B commercial vehicles. 

Essential Job Functions:
  • Perform minor repairs, lubricate moving parts, inject grease, use hand tools or compressed-air powered gun, and inspect fluid levels
  • Check, breakdown, and remount tires
  • Perform duties such as furnishing tools, materials, and supplies to other technicians
  • Assist other technicians with repairs and diagnostics as needed
  • Keep work areas, machines, and tools clean
  • Comply with established company safety and operating rules, procedures, and guidelines
  • Comply with company, state, and federal regulations and safety standards
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned

Abilities
  • Ability to read service and repair manuals
  • Ability to speak, write and understand the English language.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical functions including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
  • Ability to work well individually and as a member of a team
Diesel Engines
  • General- Research vehicle information, inspect engine fluid level and condition, perform diagnostics, and identify system components
  • Cylinder Head and Valve Train- Inspect electronic wiring harness and brackets
  • Engine Block- Inspect crankshaft and engine mounts
  • Lubrication Systems- Test engine oil pressure and levels, and perform oil and filter service
  • Cooling System- Inspect coolant, coolant system components and replace as needed
  • Air Induction and Exhaust Systems- Inspect air induction and exhaust systems and replace or service components as needed
  • Fuel System- Check fluid levels and components and replace as needed
Drive Train
  • General- Identify drive train components
  • Clutch- Inspect and adjust clutch and clutch components and determine needed action
  • Transmission- Inspect transmission components
  • Driveshaft and Universal Joints- Inspect, service, and/or replace driveshaft and universal joint components
  • Drive Axles- Check fluid levels and condition, inspect drive axel shafts, and remove and replace wheel assembly
Brakes
  • General- Identify brake system components and configurations, and identify performance problems
  • Air Brakes: Air Supply and Service Systems- Inspect air supply system components, verify gauge operation and readings
  • Air Brakes: Mechanical/Foundation Brake System- Inspect brake system components
  • Air Brakes: Parking Brake System- Inspect and test parking brake components; determine needed action
  • Hydraulic Brakes: Hydraulic System- Check master cylinder fluid level and condition; determine proper fluid type for application
  • Hydraulic Brakes: Mechanical/ Foundation Brake System- Inspect and measure rotor, disk brake, and brake drum components
  • Power Assist Systems- Check brake assist/booster system components and emergency (back-up/reserve) brake system
  • Vehicle Dynamic Brake Systems- Observe antilock brake system (ABS) warning light operation including trailer and dash mounted trailer ABS warning light
  • Wheel Bearings- Inspect, lubricate, and/or replace wheel bearings
Suspension and Steering Systems
  • General- Identify suspension and steering system components and configurations
  • Steering Column- Check steering wheel for free play, binding, and proper centering; inspect and service steering shaft U-joint(s), slip joint(s), bearings, bushings, and seals; phase steering shaft
  • Steering Pump and Gear Units- Check power steering pump and gear operation; flush and refill system
  • Steering Linkage- Inspect steering linkage components
  • Suspension Systems- Inspect suspension system components (e.g., shock absorbers, spring, and axles)
  • Wheels and Tires- Check wheel mounting hardware; check wheel condition; remove and install wheel/tire assemblies (steering and drive axle); torque fasteners to manufacturer’s specification using torque wrench
  • Frame and Coupling Devices- Inspect frame components and configurations; service and/or adjust fifth wheel
Electrical/Electronic Systems
  • General- Demonstrate knowledge of electrical/electronic principles, proper use of test equipment, and problem in electrical circuits
  • Battery System- Identify battery type and system configurations; inspect, change, and/or jump-start vehicles
  • Starting System- Demonstrate understanding of starter system operation, components, and configurations
  • Charging System- Identify, check, and inspect charging system components and configurations
  • Lighting System- Inspect lighting system components and configurations
  • Instrument Cluster and Driver Information Systems- Check gauge and warning indicator operation
Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC)
  • Refrigeration System Components- Check A/C system operation including system pressures; visually inspect A/C components for signs of leaks; check A/C monitoring system (if applicable)
  • Heating, Ventilation, and Engine Cooling Systems- Inspect engine cooling system and heater system hoses and pipes; determine needed action
Cab
  • General- Use appropriate electronic service tool(s) and procedures to check, record, and clear diagnostic codes; check and record trip/operational data; reset maintenance monitor (if applicable); interpret digital multimeter (DMM) readings
  • Instruments and Controls- Inspect mechanical key condition; check operation of ignition switch; check operation of indicator lights, warning lights and/or alarms; check instruments; record oil pressure and system voltage; check operation of electronic power take-off (PTO) and engine idle speed controls (if applicable)
  • Hardware- Check operation of cab hardware (e.g., wipers, windshield)

Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • None 

Qualifications:
  • ASE Diesel Certification preferred
  • DOT air brake certification preferred
  • 1-3 years’ experience maintaining and repairing vehicles preferred
  • Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) preferred with a clean DMV record.
     
Physical Demands: 
  • Position may require standing for long periods of time, as well as stooping, squatting, bending, kneeing, etc.
  • Ability to regularly lift 50 pounds and occasionally lift up to 100 pounds
  • Good vision to inspect repair work
  • Work requires concentrated mental and/or visual attention; the work involves performing complex tasks to very close accuracy and quality specifications; or a high degree of hand and eye coordinator for sustained periods.

Work Environment:
  • Work is typically performed under reasonably good working conditions; while exposure to any dust, fumes, dirt, noise, heat, vibration, cold and water may occur, such exposure is generally not present to the extent of being disagreeable
Must be able to work safely in a noisy area with many odors present
